Natural Beauty: Homemade Lip Balm

Last week I shared with you a little on “natural beauty products” and my desire to start moving my wholefoods/’real’ lifestyle into my bathroom as well as my kitchen.

So, I went ahead and ordered some small portions of two key products: cocoa butter and beeswax. I already had the other ingredients that I would need for the recipes I wanted to give a go – coconut oil and vitamin E (usually optional in the recipes, but worth using as it is a natural preservative for the products, as well as being amazing for skin). I also already had a couple of essential oils (lavender and tea tree oil), so I decided not to buy any new ones yet until I have a little more in the budget for them!

Now I realize that when you look at buying products like cocoa butter, beeswax and coconut oil, it can seem very expensive at first. However, I have since discovered that a little goes a very long way with all of these, and that actually buying them is 100% worth it, not just for its health benefits, but actually financially as well… it just means spending more upfront in order to spend less in the long run!

As my budget for the initial stages of this project (while I am trying things out) was pretty small, I decided to get smaller amounts of the products, and to buy bigger later if I wanted, since the cost savings if you buy these things in bulk is huge!

Having said that, even after trialling these products, I used so little that I still have enough of all the ingredients to make many many more of these products before needing to buy anymore! 🙂 (I have included links from all the ingredients to where I bought them from in case you are interested – it is far cheaper to buy all of them than to spend money on beauty products you find in shops!)

So anyway, as promised, here is the first of the recipes I tried out, which worked absolutely perfectly – I will never buy lip balm again, it is simply not worth it when this is so incredibly simple (it took me 5 minutes):

Homemade Lip BalmHomemade Lip Balm

From Young Wife’s Guide (to see Jami’s video on how to make this, click on the link) – I made half the recipe as I was trialling them and not making a big batch like she does.

1 1/2 tbsp beeswax (I bought blocks, so had to shave/cut the blocks)

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp coconut oil

2 tsp cocoa butter (or shea butter)

1/2 tsp vitamin E oil (or contents of one capsule – optional)

4 drops essential oil of choice (I used lavender – this is optional, you can make it fragrance-free if you want)

Containers to pour the lip balm into – I used the small containers in this pack (makes enough for about 5), Jami uses these (makes enough for around 10)

1. Combine the beeswax, both oils, and the cocoa butter in a heatproof bowl and place the bowl ‘bain-marie‘ (or place the bowl directly) in a pan of hot water. Stir until all the ingredients have melted.

2. Remove from the heat and add the vitamin E and essential oil of your choice if using. Mix together, then pour into containers (if you have proper chapstick tubes, Jami suggests using a dropper). It should harden very quickly, but you can put them in the fridge for a few minutes if you want to speed it up.
