Book Review: Intentional Marriage

Intentional Marriage: The Art of Loving Your Husband is a 31-day devotional written by Crystal Brothers of Serving Joyfully.

Intentional MarriageI have read many books on marriage, from devotionals to practical guides, and I have found this to be a particularly useful one. Its simplicity is its greatest blessing, as it is very easy to work through in the way it is laid out.

“The  biggest  threat  to  marriages  in  our  modern  world  is  daily  neglect.  When  we  stop  trying,  we   start  drifting  apart.”

I have found this to be so true. In a technology-driven, fast-paced world that prioritizes busyness and productivity, it is incredibly easy to slip into patterns of constant hurry, of working even when you are not at work, of walking through life without actually stopping and living it. Nowhere is this more noticeable than in marriage. We take each other for granted so easily, and always assume that because of our commitment to each other and the fact that we live in the same house, we will eventually find time to spend together.

Crystal gets this. And she knows how easily we start to blame each other, waiting for the other to give in and change first. So she gives us a simple concept: follow Gandhi’s advice and “be the change you want to see in the world“. For 31 days, she provides you with simple challenges and a space to reflect on and pray through how that day has gone.

The concept is simple, but the change is revolutionary. Some of Crystal’s challenges are ones that I have heard before, and yet didn’t realize I really needed to hear them again and actually put them into practice. Others were new and beautifully inspiring.

I love her focus on the little things, the everyday graces:

“Keep looking for little ways to bless your husband every single day.”

Whether you are engaged, newlywed, or are celebrating 60 years together, this is a devotional I would truly recommend to you. It beautifully captures the way the little things are as important in marriage (sometimes more so) than the big romantic gestures.

I love the way this book combines a devotional and a practical marriage guide so beautifully, and especially the fact that Crystal helps you to continue to move forwards after the 31-day challenge with her helpful hints: 101 Ways to Bless Your Husband, 101 Free/Cheap Date Night Ideas, and 101 Conversation Starters.

This is not just an ebook, it is a companion. Crystal meets you where you are, takes you by the hand, and guides you gently and humbly through the challenge of changing and improving not simply your marriage, but your life.
